Kani Weaves
Woven centimeter by centimeter using coded Tujis (wooden bobbins) and generational Talim scripts. A single shawl requires up to 18 months of solitary devotion.
Registered Masterpieces
Each piece accompanies an encoded Geographical Indication provenance register number.
Decoding the Talim Script
Unlike ordinary embroideries applied atop fabric, a Kani shawl is woven directly into existence. The pattern exists solely as cryptic, rhythmic notations called Talim, recited by the Ustad (master) and answered stitch-by-stitch by the weaver.
The Naqash’s Talim Strip
The pattern designer (Naqash) transcribes complex pictorial paintings into miniature cryptic scripts. Each line dictates how many warp threads are entwined by which yarn tint.
Tuji: The Eyeless Bobbin
Instead of shuttles, weavers use hundreds of smooth wooden twigs known as Tujis, whittled from hazel or walnut. Each carries its solitary hue across micro-grids.
